Advice and fast quotations for all your projects
Luminaires are classified according to NF C71-000 in order of electrical insulation; this standard helps protect people against the risk of electrocution, depending on the environments in which the luminaires are installed.
Indeed, there are dangers and risks involved in choosing a luminaire that is not suited to your environment. The main risks are fire, electrification and even electrocution. The protection index is an international standard, established by the International Electrotechnical Commission, relating to watertightness. The purpose of the IP protection index is to classify electrical equipment according to the level of protection it offers against the intrusion of foreign bodies, whether solid or liquid.
.
The first number "4" stands for protection against solid objects larger than 1 mm. The second number "4" means protection against splashing water from all directions. Luminaires with an IP 44 rating are therefore ideal for use in bathrooms or outdoors. (A fortiori, they can of course also be installed indoors... even if the IP required indoors is only IP 20). On the other hand, these designer luminaires shouldn't be too close to a large water source; for a very large water source, you'll need to go for luminaires with protection ratings IP 65 and higher. For optimum rendering, opt for LED and if possible dimmable bulbs, to vary the light to suit your mood!
