Designer lighting fixtures of the 60s offer a genuine retro look. That decade was marked by the baby boom teenagers, strong economies and business opportunities, outlooks of never-ending prosperity and most definitely mass consumers. This heightened period of the American Dream was also infused into designer objects resulting in carefreeness and feel-good overtones. At once imaginative and inventive, these objects put functionality on the back burner. Designers of the 60s were curious, looking for the novel and original. The colors were bright and the contours distinctive of the 60s.
In the Scandinavian countries, this 60s trend exploded and numerous are the lights that incarnate the essence of design of the period, such as the table lamp and pendant collection from FlowerPot by the Danish designer Verner Panton.
Iconic designs were also on offer in Italy: the Pipistrello table lamps by Italian designer Gae Aulenti were created in 1965 for the brand Martinelli Luce. This legendary lamp drew its inspiration from bat wings, which is telling about the lamp's name in Italian. Renowned pendant lamps, Globo di Luce, were also created at this time. Elegant and sober, the blown glass globes spread their light so marvelously.
