Our lighting, from Memphis Milano

Founded in 1981 in Milan, Italy, by Ettore Sottsass and a group of young designers, Memphis Milano was a design firm emblematic of the Memphis movement. This movement was characterized by bold, expressive, and nonconformist designs.

Memphis Milano’s creations were often pieces of furniture, lamps, and functional art objects that stood out for their unique aesthetic. The pieces were recognizable for their use of bold geometric shapes, vibrant colors, and eccentric patterns. The mix of materials—such as plastic, metal, laminated wood, and graphic patterns—contributed to the distinctive look of Memphis products.

The Memphis movement had a profound influence on 1980s design culture, revolutionizing established trends and challenging conventional design norms. Memphis Milano’s creations were featured in iconic exhibitions, attracting international attention and sparking great interest in this new and provocative aesthetic.

However, despite its initial success, Memphis Milano ceased production in 1988. Despite its short lifespan as an active company, the influence and legacy of the Memphis movement still endure in the world of contemporary design, inspiring many designers to push boundaries and adopt unconventional approaches in their creations.
