Our lighting, from Stilnovo

1946 - On June 1, Bruno Gatta founded Stilnovo in the heart of Milan.

1947 - Stilnovo participated in the 8th Milan Triennale and immediately launched a marketing campaign focused on the industry’s leading trade magazines.

1949 - Bruno Gatta goes into business with his brother Paolo, a recent college graduate. In September, they establish “Stilnovo Srl,” with a share capital of 400,000 Italian lire. This marked the beginning of a management journey that, in just a few years, would establish the company as a leader in modern lighting.

1951 - Stilnovo participated in the 9th Milan Triennale and the Oslo Fair, presenting various collections.

1954 - Opening of the new Milan facility at Via Durini 26. Stilnovo wins the silver medal at the 10th Milan Triennale.

1955 - The 2061 was the first Stilnovo lamp selected for the Compasso d’Oro.

1956 - Stilnovo reached a share capital of 4,000,000 Italian lire, a tenfold increase in just seven years.

1957 - Achille and Piergiacomo Castiglioni design two Saliscendi light fixtures for the new Milan Chamber of Commerce.

1959 - Stilnovo becomes a public limited company, undertaking numerous contract projects, including the Galfa Tower in Milan, designed by architect Melchiorre Bega.

1965 - Opening of the new production plant in Lainate. Giovanni Luigi Gorgoni designs the Buonanotte.

1968 - BBPR, Joe Colombo, Angelo Mangiarotti, Ettore Sottsass, Marcello Pietrantoni, Roberto Lucci, Danilo, and Corrado Aroldi design for Stilnovo. Giancarlo Iliprandi creates the new brand identity.

1969 - Joe Colombo’s Bazooka collection is nominated for the Compasso d’Oro. Antonio Macchi designs the Gràvita lamp for Stilnovo.

1970 - Joe Colombo designs the Topo, Minitopo, and Triedro.

1971 - De Pas, D'Urbino, and Lomazzi design Lampiatta, which can be adjusted without the use of joints or mechanisms.

1972 - Stilnovo participates in the exhibition “Italy, the New Domestic Landscape” at MoMA in New York, where the Periscopio and Nuvola lamps are added to the permanent collection. Gae Aulenti and Livio Castiglioni design the Trepiù system.

1977 - Ettore Sottsass designs Don and Valigia, characterized by a radical design that, in the 1980s, gives rise to the Memphis group.

1978 - De Pas, D’Urbino, and Lomazzi design the Fante lamp, which can be easily adjusted thanks to the reflector on the lamp head, reminiscent of a hat.

1981 - Gae Aulenti and Piero Castiglioni designed the Minibox, a portable and playful lamp.

1985 - Shigeaki Asahara designed the Luna lamp.

1988 - After decades of success, confirmed by the numerous lamps on display in the world’s most important design museums, Stilnovo came to an abrupt halt, in the middle of a journey that began in the 1940s.

Stilnovo, today.

In 2019, the Linea Light Group—a global leader in LED lighting—acquired Stilnovo, with the aim of relaunching the brand in the modern world and continuing a story that began over 70 years ago.

With the pragmatic and innovative approach that characterizes both Stilnovo and the Linea Light Group, the project calls for the reissue of the superb icons of the past and the involvement of new designers to develop future lighting fixtures.
