Antonio Macchi Cassia was born in Milan in 1937 and is still alive at the age of 86. A graduate of the School of Mechanical Engineering in Fribourg (CH), he began working in 1960 as a graphic designer in the advertising department of La Rinascente in Milan. Between 1960 and 1961, he worked as a freelance graphic designer, while in 1962 and 1963, he was employed in the mechanical design department of Siaf in Milan. Between 1963 and 1964, he took part in research into epoxy resins and their application in industrial plants at Farbwerke Hoechst in Frankfurt.

In 1964-1965, he managed work at the Anic plants in Gela and Ferrandina on behalf of Siaf in Milan. In 1966-1967, Macchi Cassia was responsible for the design and construction of a pilot plant for the application of epoxy resins, a Hoechst-Siaf patent. From 1968 to 1970, he was a partner in the Bonfanti-Macchi Cassia-Porta technical studio. From 1968 to 1993, he worked as a consultant for Olivetti, in the field of "industrial design". From 1971 to 1992, he also collaborated with architect Roberto Beretta's design studio. In 1985, together with three friends, he founded Imaplast s.r.l., a company dedicated to molding plastic materials and assembling self-designed products. Today, Antonio Macchi Cassia continues to own the Milan-based studio of the same name.
