Plumen is the world’s first designer of low-energy light bulbs. They took a familiar, existing design and transformed it into an energy efficient light bulb that is now a desirable object to show and enjoy. Named after a unit of measuring the amount of light produced (lumen), the company was launched in 2010 and featured two designs of energy efficient light bulbs, plus five colours for their Drop Cap Pendants. The Plumen 001 was awarded the Brit Insurance Design of the Year by the Design Museum in London and the prestigious Black Pencil at the D&AD awards in 2011. It is included in the permanent collections of MoMA, the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt Collection, The Art Institute of Chicago and the Design Museum in Helsinki. Plumen celebrates new technologies, champions good ideas and is intent on developing products that elevate everyone’s experience of light. By adapting the CFL manufacturing process, Plumen has created a visually striking bulb that saves up to 80% on energy bills and lasts 8 times longer than a standard incandescent bulb. Their bulbs are distinguishable by their elegant sculptural form. Instead of being hidden from view, as low energy light bulbs tend to be, Plumen bulbs are designed to be on show. They invest in design, research and high-quality components to get the best out of new lighting technologies. By creating an attractive form, Plumen help people to make an environmentally sound choice without having to compromise on style.
