Founded in 2011 and based in Stockholm, Afteroom studio is run by design couple Hung-Ming Chen and Chen-Yen Wei.
Chen-Yen Wei grew up in Taipei, Taiwan, and graduated from the National Taipei College of Business, but her real passion was fashion design. Hung-Ming Chen grew up in Taichung City, an industrial area in Taiwan, and turned to industrial design after a short stint in the electronics industry. Realising that mobile phones don't last more than three years, he quickly turned to furniture, where the lifespan is much longer, even infinite.
The Taiwanese-born duo launched their design studio with the idea of creating modern objects that would only get better with time. The name 'Afteroom' represents their fascination with the transformation of a space over time - specifically, what happens to a room after a beautifully designed object is introduced.
Afteroom studio's mission is to create beautiful, timeless products whose value increases over time. Their inspiration stems from an intriguing interest in form, proportion, meaning, materials and culture.
The studio was named Star of the Year by the Elle Decoration Sweden Design Awards in 2015. Today, the studio works with world-renowned brands such as Menu and Pholc to name a few.
