Tom Skeehan is an Australian industrial designer and the founder of SKEEHAN Studio, established in 2011. Based in Australia, his studio designs furniture, objects, lighting, and spaces through an approach rooted in research, experimentation, and an understanding of materials. His work lies at the intersection of artisanal craftsmanship and contemporary production, with a particular focus on functionality and manufacturing processes.
His collaboration with the Australian brand Rakumba particularly illustrates this approach. For the brand, Tom Skeehan has designed the Plume, Haru, and So collections, in which the material itself serves as the starting point for the design. Haru and So explore hand-blown glass crafted by Australian glass artisans, playing with rounded volumes, layered colors, and the depth of the glass. With Plume, by contrast, the designer works with aluminum foil: its controlled deformation transforms a flat surface into a light, sculptural three-dimensional form.
Tom Skeehan has also developed the Ray lighting system with Rakumba, created in collaboration with Canberra Glassworks. This collection draws on a traditional glass thermoforming technique and includes, notably, a pendant lamp and a wall sconce. Through these various creations, the designer establishes a signature style in which light interacts with material, color, and local craftsmanship, in an approach that is both experimental and functional.
