Vibeke Fonnesberg Schmidt, born in Denmark, is at the crossroads of design, art and craft. Her career began in Japan, where she first trained in ceramics, a field that enabled her to hone her mastery of materials and forms. Back in Copenhagen, she continued her studies at the Danish School of Design, now the Royal Danish Academy. Her porcelain-focused creations marked the start of a flourishing career as a studio potter, with works exhibited in renowned galleries and museums such as the Trapholt Museum and Designmuseum Denmark.

Despite her success, she found ceramics too restrictive to fully express her creativity. She then turned to woodworking, where she explored more organic forms and manual processes. This phase served as a transition to the use of Plexiglas, a material more in line with her sculptural vision. This choice marked a turning point, enabling her to play with light, geometric shapes and color.

Today, Fonnesberg Schmidt is renowned for her creations in Plexiglas, which she often combines with metal to create sculptural lighting fixtures. Inspired by geometry and architecture, her work illustrates a balance between art and functionality, with a systematic yet exploratory approach. Her works embody a unique fusion of mathematics, design and artistic sensibility.

"I often take geometry as a starting point, creating sculptural studies of form that straddle the line between mathematics and art."
