But how do you choose the right light bulb for your needs? A light source has three main electrical characteristics: lumens, kelvins, and watts.

Lumens

Lumens, which correspond to luminous flux, are a unit of light output that indicates how much light useful for illumination is emitted by a light bulb or lamp.

For low-light applications, such as a bedside lamp, choose a bulb that emits between 400 and 800 lumens.

On the other hand, if you want a well-lit space, choose between 1,200 and 2,000 lumens, especially for large living areas.

Kelvins

The kelvin is a unit of measurement that indicates the color temperature of light. Generally, color temperature ranges from 2,000 to 10,000 kelvins. The lower the color temperature, the warmer the light…

For a space you want to feel warm and inviting, opt for a kelvin rating around 2,700, which corresponds to warm white.

For bathrooms, you can go up to 3,000 kelvin for a whiter light.
