Emiliana Martinelli was born in Lucca, Italy where she graduated from the School of Art specialized in Ceramics. She went on to get Industrial Design and Architecture diplomas at ISIA in Florence. Immediately after her studies, Emiliana started working for the family company, established in the 30s by her grandfather Plinio and later expanded in the hands of her father Emilio, who steered the company in the 50s towards the design and production of lamps. Together they embarked on a long collaboration developing the techniques and the products which have characterized the production by Martinelli Luce over the past years. Emiliana Martinelli is chairwoman of Martinelli Luce as well as designer and art director in charge of graphics, communications and materials. She handles trade fair stands both in Italy and abroad. As for designing, she has always been inspired by nature, geometric forms and shadows. Emiliana Martinelli has received a number of international acknowledgements such as IF Product Design given to Colibrì in 2011 and in 2013, to the lamp Circolar Pol XXL in 2014, but she has also worked with architects such as Gae Aulenti and important designers outside her company such as Sergio Asti, Marc Sadler, Studio Orlandini, Luisa Bocchietto, Serge and Robert Cornelissen and Michel Boucquillon. Recently she has also brought into the company some young and very promising designers - Brian Sironi, Marco De Santi, Studio 4P1B - whose products developed for Martinelli Luce have obtained several acknowledgements such as IF Product Design and IF PProduct Design Gold, Red Dot design award, the Selection for ADI Design Index, the COMPASSO D’ORO. Emiliana Martinelli’s activity is exemplified in the design of large-sized lighting devices such as the series Circolar Pol and Circular Pol XXL.
