Ignazio Gardella (Milan, 1905 - Oleggio, 1999) was one of the leading figures in 20th century Italian architecture. Born into a family of engineers and architects, Ignazio Gardella studied engineering at the Milan Polytechnic and graduated in 1928. Following this, he graduated as an architect in 1949 from the University Institute of Architecture of Venice (IUAV). It was during his studies that Ignazio Gardella came into contact with other young Milanese protagonists. Together, they will then take an active part in the creation of the modern Italian movement.

He worked for many years with his father, where they produced a significant amount of project and realization as part of engineering. In addition, they participate in some architectural competitions in collaboration with Luigi Vietti, for the construction of "della casa del fascio" (House of Fascism, Oleggio).

After the Second World War, he became one of the main actors in the cultural debate on the reconstruction of the country.
At the same time, Gardella built many important buildings, such as the Casa Barbieri in Castana (1945-1946), a simple country house. His houses mainly answer a question of space saving. We can also mention the "Borsalino" houses in Alessandria in 1952.

On the other hand, he was at the top of the Made in Italy architecture scene between 1960 and 1970. He appeared in many international journals and became a renowned architect. Until the 1990s, Gardella continued to produce and design furniture and accessories while continuing its extraordinary activity as an architect.
