Marie Michielssen is a Belgian designer whose creative world lies at the intersection of art, craftsmanship, and design. Trained in graphic design, she founded her own studio in 1995 and began by transforming and decorating terracotta flowerpots. This initial venture marked the beginning of a long-standing collaboration with the Belgian brand Serax.
Her work is distinguished by an intuitive, tactile, and deliberately imperfect approach. She draws inspiration from everyday life and enjoys repurposing old or forgotten materials, such as papier-mâché, ceramics, or metal. Her creations combine sculptural forms, balanced proportions, and functionality.
At Serax, Marie Michielssen designs collections of furniture, lighting, accessories, and tableware. Among her iconic creations are the Earth, Pawn, La Mère, and Urban Jungle collections, recognizable by their organic shapes and strong material presence. Her artisanal approach earned her the title of Designer of the Year 2025 from Tableware International.
She embraces a highly hands-on creative process: sketches, paintings, and cardboard models precede each creation, without the use of a computer. This method allows her to experiment directly with proportions, materials, and volumes, while leaving plenty of room for serendipity and imperfections.
