Paolo Ulian attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara where he took painting courses under Getulio Alviani and Luciano Fabro, before moving to Florence to enroll in the ISIA Design Institute. In 1990, he presented his thesis, designing a cardboard screen, which won him the Belgian Design for Europe Award. In the same year, he moved to Milan to work with Enzo Mari, where he stayed until 1992, before returning to Tuscany and starting his own business with his brother Giuseppe, with whom he still works today. During that period, he devoted himself to experimentation, taking part in several collective exhibitions, particularly those organized at the Spazio Opos in Milan. From 1995 to 2000, some of the concepts presented at these exhibitions were made into actual products, heralding the start of his partnership with some leading Italian design firms. For FontanaArte, he designed the Bowl in 2003, a wall-mounted furnishing accessory with the dual function of holder and coat hook. During the 2009 Milan Furniture Fair, Beppe Finessi curated his first solo exhibition at Careof-ViaFarini, Fabbrica del Vapore, Milan. His second solo exhibition, curated by Enzo Mari, was staged at the Milan Triennale in January 2010.
