Sven Middelboe

Birthdate
1910
Nationality
Danish
Occupation
Designer

Sven Middelboe was born in 1910. His art is largely inspired by the 1920s, a period that established the careers of many innovative and inspiring artists. However, it was a period of reflection after the horrors of the First World War, and major changes in politics were taking place around the world.
Sven obtained a business degree before dedicating himself to design, in which he specialised in lighting.
At the end of the 1940s, he set up his own lighting company with the famous designer and architect Jørn Utzon. The collaboration between the two men resulted in the now iconic Sundowner and Tivoli pendant lamps, which at the time were lacquered and assembled by hand in rather primitive conditions.

Throughout his career, Sven Middelboe continued to experiment with various constructions and shadow combinations, resulting in the Verona pendant, launched in 1968. The series quickly became popular and today Verona is considered one of the most iconic of Sven Middelboe's wide range of lighting designs.
