Hay is an editing house founded in 2002 in Copenhagen by Mette and Rolf Hay.
Hay began as a furniture company with only a few products in the range. In the years since, Hay has expanded into new categories, incorporating lighting, accessories, and textiles into their offer. After a productive beginning within European market, Hay reached out to the Asian market. The year 2018 marks a new chapter in the development of Hay as the company joins forces with renowned American manufacturing company Herman Miller, to inhabit yet another market.

“ I have always been extremely fascinated by everyday objects. I love working on products that we have in our hand every day. For me, everyday life is my biggest inspiration.” Mette Hay

HAY’S VISION

Hay has always believed that good design is everyone’s right. That is why, from the very beginning, co-founders Mette and Rolf Hay committed to working with their generation’s best designers from all over the world to create high-quality products that would be available to a wide audience. This founding principle continues to motivate Hay today.

WHAT HAY DOES

Hay is inspired by the realities of life today, in which traditional divides between personal and professional space are more fluid, so a piece of furniture, of lighting, and of accessories can be used in a diversity of environments and suits many needs. Therefore, Hay’s products are always flexible and adaptable, versatile and varied; meaning they can be used in a living room to an office, hotel lounger, or café. From a toothbrush to a sofa to a pendant light, Hay’s products always offer a fresh take on the quotidian objects that are part of everyday life. No object is too common, no detail is too minute: Hay pays attention to the small moments that make up lives.

THE BRAND HAY

At Hay, every product draws from three primary sources of inspiration: art, architecture, and fashion. Hay pays close attention to and gets inspired by its surroundings; putting the finger on the pulse of contemporary culture is how Hay keeps pace with the world.

“What I admire about art is the unexpected, the originality; architecture is of course the context and the home of what we make, and fashion has a wonderful dynamism to it, reflecting the spirit of the time and what’s happening right now. I would say that the best products we have done, they may exist somewhere in between these three environments, drawing from a little bit of everything.” Rolf Hay

HAY’S DNA

As Hay expands to inhabit multiple continents and to include ever-more design categories, four essential values at the core of Hay continue to shape and motivate the company today: passion, function, community, and responsibility.

Passion… Hay is motivated by the love of design and a commitment to constant innovation. Hay always challenges itself to create products that elevate the modest moments of everyday life. This means thinking about everyday items in new, original ways, using the most cutting-edge materials, methods, tools, and technologies available.

Function… At Hay, form always follows function. Its products are beautiful, sleek, fresh, and stylish – but use and comfort come first. Hay’s designs always prioritize what is essential: the simplest solution is usually the best solution.

Community… Hay is an international company with design that crosses border. From its designers to its suppliers to its product-development teams, collaboration is fundamental to Hay. A strong partnership is the synergy achieved by numerous minds, numerous skill sets, numerous tools, and numerous hands working in harmony.

Responsibility… High-quality means thoughtfully designed, well crafted, and built to last designs. Hay strives to minimize its impact on the planet while making durable products that will live with one for along time. Therefore, a team of designers, technicians, and engineers ensure that every product is considered from every angle and withstands quality-control of high standards.
