Antoni de Moragas Gallissà (1913-1985) was a Spanish architect and designer born in Barcelona.
He trained at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Barcelona (ETSAB), where he was exposed to the ideas of the Modern Movement in architecture. From the outset of his career, Moragas Gallissà distinguished himself by his commitment to rationalism and functionalism, currents that profoundly influenced his approach to design. In 1951, he was one of the founders of Grupo R, an association of architects and designers committed to promoting modern architecture and design in Spain, a country then marked by a certain stylistic conservatism.
Antoni de Moragas Gallissà's inspirations were rooted in European modernist movements, particularly the Bauhaus and Italian rationalism. He admired the work of Le Corbusier and Bauhaus masters such as Walter Gropius and Mies van der Rohe. Moragas Gallissà sought to incorporate their principles of functionality and minimalism into his own designs, while remaining sensitive to Spain's cultural and social contexts. His approach aimed to improve everyday life through well-designed, accessible and practical objects and spaces.
His most notable achievements include a variety of projects ranging from residential and commercial architecture to industrial design objects. Moragas Gallissà has collaborated with various companies and institutions, contributing to projects such as furniture design for the company "Mobles 114" and public spaces in Barcelona. His designs are characterized by elegant simplicity, functionality and attention to detail. As a member of Grupo R, he played a key role in spreading modern ideas in Spain, influencing a new generation of designers and architects. His legacy lives on today, not least thanks to the re-edition of some of his luminaires by the Spanish company Santa&Cole.
