Our lighting, the 1970s

Light fixtures designed in the 1970s drew inspiration from the rebellious spirit of the times and often featured flashy, vibrant designs. At that time, public opinion was divided. Some people were still enjoying a certain carefree attitude, a legacy of the “Trente Glorieuses.” Others were more pessimistic in the face of the oil crises, the economic downturn, and political unrest. Design, for its part, was influenced by these social movements; it became nonconformist. Straddling the line between provocation and cultural freedom, objects designed in the 1970s embodied rebellion. Colors, flashy and shiny effects, synthetic materials, and futuristic looks perfectly define 1970s-style lighting fixtures. Highly imaginative and inventive, these objects pushed functionality into the background. Designers of the 1970s sought originality, curiosity, and novelty.

A prime example of these bold, vibrant colors is Emiliana Martinelli’s Bubbles pendant lights, created starting in 1973. They add a pop art touch that is both contemporary and timeless.

Another 1970s icon: the Atollo lamps
, designed in 1977 by Italian designer Vico Magistretti for the lighting company Oluce
. These lamps feature a recognizable and simple, yet very elegant, mushroom shape.


And finally, Italian designer Fernando Cassetta left his mark on the 1970s with his famous collection of animal-shaped lamps
, including the iconic dog lamp, now reissued using 3D printing.
