Our lighting, the 1960s

Light fixtures designed in the 1960s offer a true retro look. In the midst of a period of rapid growth, society championed the cult of endless prosperity, as well as mass consumption. It was the American dream. All of this is reflected in the design; new creations were inspired by a sense of carefree cheerfulness. Highly imaginative and inventive, these objects placed functionality in the background. Designers of the 1960s sought originality, curiosity, and novelty. Bright colors and curves define this 1960s design style.

In Scandinavian countries, this trend exploded, and many lighting fixtures became design icons, such as the Flowerpot collection of table and pendant lamps, designed by the Danish designer Verner Panton.

Other design icons emerged from Italy. For example, the Pipistrello table lamp by Italian designer Gae Aulenti was created in 1965 for the Martinelli Luce brand.
